At Montauk Avenue Baptist Church all of our staff is called by God. Most of our staff are volunteers working to further God’s kingdom through the gifts God has equipped them with.
The following profiles are to help you better get to know the special people whom serve God in our church.
Pastor – Stephen Heleman
As pastor of MABC I have three primary areas of focus. Vision, helping us go where God wants us to go as a church. Teaching, helping us know what God is saying to us. Equipping, helping us know what God wants us to do.

Why did you join the ministry? As crazy as it sounds I believe that God chose me to be pastor of MABC so I am simply following his plan for my life.
What do you hope to bring to the ministry? – I hope to help people experience all that God planned for them
How do you think MABC could better serve the surrounding area? – Love those around us the way that God loves us

Why did you join the ministry? Called by God after a life-changing experience when at 30 I was saved after my first wife and 2 boys were killed in an auto accident.
What do you hope to bring to the ministry? Am retired from full time ministry, but still teaching adult primetimers (over 60)- hope to encourage and edify classmates
How does this ministry help you to use your spiritual gifts? I have 5 years of Bible school, degrees in Bible and Missions, 33 years exp as a pastor and this background helps me in teaching.
How do you think MABC could better serve the surrounding area? House to house visitation to befriend, evangelize and make MABC known to them as a helpful presence.
What will the attendees learn? The Word of God
Why would people benefit from attending? They would enjoy fellowship, add to their knowledge of the Word and grow in the Lord
Bradley Applegate
Why did you join the ministry? I was Asked.
What do you hope to bring to the ministry? My notes? I am nothing, and have nothing to offer, but I hope that God can give me something to say that will draw people closer to Him. I hope to bring people to the knowledge that they need to be fully surrendered to the will of God; that we do not “make room for God” in our lives, but that Christ IS our life.
How do you think MABC could better serve the surrounding area? Everyone needs Christ, but not everyone knows that. As a church, we need to make sure that our neighbors know they need Christ.
What is your ministry about? & What is your ministry purpose? Meeting needs. Loving people, and equipping them to love people. The goal with discuss the previous week’s Sunday Celebration message is to bring people closer to God by providing an opportunity to probe deeper, to answer questions (that anyone might have), to discuss practical applications of the points made. We also enjoy the fellowship with each other, solicit prayer requests and praises.
What will the attendees learn? People have the opportunity to learn whatever they choose, bring questions, bring challenges; simple, hard, and everything in between, let’s talk about God.
Why would people benefit from attending? Here again people will only benefit as much as they choose to benefit. We are there to meet a need, the needs we know about, if we are unaware, we can do nothing.

Why did you join the ministry? I am married to the pastor…No really, I am called by God to love His people, wherever we may be, and now, we are in New London, CT, and these are God’s people, and it is my pleasure and privilege to work alongside the men and women of this congregation as we love God and love His people.
What do you hope to bring to the ministry? Devoted service that works in real life.
How does this ministry help you to use your spiritual gifts? It pushes me to use my music, love on children, and support my pastor, and raise our children in a Godly household.
How do you think MABC could better serve the surrounding area? We desire to reach out to those who have never entered the doors of a church, or who are tired of the same old church experience, and bring a relevant look at the truth of the saving power of Jesus Christ.
What is your ministry about? Worship, Praise, and living daily in His time, not my own.
What is your ministry purpose? To bring excitement and joy to our Sunday celebration through praise and worship, and help everyone who enters our doors feel welcomed.

Why did you join the ministry? I enjoy helping people assisting. I have been involved in some ways for a long time now, and it just feels where I am called to be.
What do you hope to bring to the ministry? It's almost unfair, I end up gaining more from any experience in the ministry than I actually give. Right now I am involved in putting sermons online. I hope that everyone attending and people who find us online find an easy way to connect to us via the website and online sermons.
How does this ministry help you to use your spiritual gifts? In one way I believe it gives me an ability to serve in the community that I live in, and the church I attend. It's also an opportunity to find and develop gifts that I may not know I have.
How do you think MABC could better serve the surrounding area? One of the reason's I feel The Lord brought me to MABC is the local community. I live in this area, and want to see it thrive. I believe we could do more with the children in the New London area, and more outreach to the local colleges. |
